Good News ... The state government of Assam on 9 September 2014 withdrew the controversial circular regarding the use of Assamese as official language in Barak Valley. However, a fresh circular was issued by the Government of Assam stating that Bengali will continue to be the official language of Barak valley. Background The circular dated 30 November 2013 created widespread resentment among the people of Barak Valley. Subsequently, the circular was withdrawn as it was not actually meant for Barak valley. Barak Valley • Barak Valley is located in the southern region of Assam. • The official language of Barak valley is Bengali. In fact, the Bengali speaking population constituted a majority in the region. • It was in 1960-61 that Bengali was made the official language of Barak Valley following the Bengali Language Movement. • The Bengali Language Movement was a protest against the decision of the Government of Assam to make Assamese the only official language of the state.
