Good afternoon DPT class of 2016, As Dr. Medley indicated in - TopicsExpress

Good afternoon DPT class of 2016, As Dr. Medley indicated in lecture, the current government “shutdown” and Obama-care controversies have led to some concern. Some of this concern may be because there are a great deal of unknown variables. Things may also seem to be out of control. As a result, this may lead us to premature unwarranted despair which can negatively affect our motivation. So, I want to encourage everyone to keep this in perspective. We have chosen a stable profession. According to 2013 Top 10 best jobs report by U. S. News and World Report, the Physical Therapist profession is ranked eighth. Careers were ranked according to the following factors (percentage relates to how much the category factored into the ranking): · 10-Year Growth Volume (10%) · 10-Year Growth Percentage (10%) · Median Salary (30%) · Job Prospects (20%) · Employment Rate (20%) · Stress Level (5%) · Work-Life Balance (5%) For more insight into job projections, I encourage everyone to follow this link as well, money.usnews/money/careers/articles/2012/09/10/where-the-jobs-will-be-in-2020. This is another projection of job prospects for the future. It shows healthcare just below computer programming as the two biggest fields to work within. This is also good news for fulfilling VISION 2020. At first glance, one might lose heart that computer programming is the best field. However, our profession has a caveat of need exposed by that data too. With an aging population and a business climate that draws so many into the sedentary computer-programming career, we as healthcare providers should have plenty of purpose. So, don’t worry about a job. We have a career, a profession, an identity, and a purpose. We are blessed. Besides, we have a few years for others to work out the kinks before DPT class of 2016 hits the scene. One thing that we can do right now is to ensure that our voices are heard. Some of the issues that we can take action on are explained under the Advocacy tab on the APTA website. The ethics presentation at the district meeting covered most of these issues but the APTA website provides us briefings and more in depth explanations under the Advocacy section. I find little regard for pointlessness so I don’t want to intrude too much more on your time. In the near future, I intend to send out ways that we can get involved to ensure that our voices are heard. These requests will be simple to fulfill and should require little of your time to stay involved with ADVOCATING FOR PHYSICAL THERAPY. The way I involved myself initially was to become more informed and you can do the same. Login to the APTA website and select the Advocacy tab near the top of the page. From the drop-down menu or side-tabs along the left of the page, select “Take Action”. From here, you can select the link to “PTeam” if you want to stay up on current affairs. However, I have done this already and will let everyone know the best time to take action. Have a blessed week and good luck studying for midterms! Semper Fidelis, James
