Good article but misses the question of why have these mainly agrarian societies suddenly (last 20 years or so) become so poverty stricken and therefore crime ridden. Possibly has a lot to do with the Fair Trade Agreement which allows the US subsidized agricultural products to be sold to these countries at below cost of production. This in turn destroys the farmers livelihood and leads to more and more poverty. Agrarian societies may appear poor because they have no money to buy Chinese made doodads but they little need for money as they used to produce (and sell) their own produce. It is hard to sell corn for 10 cents an ear if your cost to produce it was 15 cents. The US farm subsidies (which primarily go to large agribusiness corporations) are destroying our neighboring farming communities. Fair Trade my ass!
