Good as Gold An Amazing Fact: Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all the metals. It can easily be beaten or hammered so thin that it is translucent. Just one ounce of gold can be drawn into a wire more than 50 miles long. This precious metal occurs in seawater to the extent of up to 250 parts by weight to 100 million parts of water. Although the quantity of gold present in seawater is more than nine billion metric tons, the cost of recovering the gold would be far greater than the value of the gold recovered. Pure gold has a bright yellow color and luster that it maintains without oxidizing in air or water. It is the least reactive chemical element known. It has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coins, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history. The density of gold is higher than most other metals, making it difficult to pass counterfeits. Many factors determine the value of a gold coin, such as its rarity, age, condition, and the number originally minted. Gold coins coveted by collectors include the Aureus, Solidus, and Spur Ryal. In July 2002, a very rare $20 1933 Double Eagle gold coin sold for a record $7,590,020 at Sotheby’s, making it the most valuable coin ever sold. In early 1933, more than 445,000 Double Eagle coins had been struck by the U.S. Mint, but most of these were surrendered and melted down following Executive Order 6102. Only a few coins managed to survive. David speaks of God’s law with reference to gold and silver. “The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of coins of gold and silver” (Psalm 119:72). And in speaking of God’s commandments, he writes, “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold” (Psalm 19:10). Perhaps the density of gold explains why God’s law is not corruptible or reactive to elements around it. Do we value God’s Word even more than the finest gold coins in the world? KEY BIBLE TEXTS And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. - Revelation 21:21
