Good communication can be complicated especially when people lack reliable phone services and English may not be spoken. This was the case yesterday, with a dog that was going to be put down because he had been at the shelter several weeks and was now sick with an upper respiratory infection and some other medical issues. The shelter that we work out of is a very busy, always crowded shelter that serves a densely populated community. A member of the staff asked our counselor Amanda to call the dog owner one more time to see if he would be interested in redeeming his dog before the dog was euthanized. Amanda called the dog owner and yes, he was definitely interested, actually he was interested two weeks ago, he always wanted to redeem his dog but he didnt understand the process and he didnt have the money to pay the fees. It was an emotional phone call. DDR paid the fees and this is another example of a dog that always had a home, going back home. Imagine how many pets are in a shelter right now across the country who are just like this dog, have a family who will take them back but for whatever reason, they dont understand the process and cant pay all or even some of the fees.
