Good luck:Bad luck. - I came back from a early morning medative walk to the beach, doing poem writing, yoga and swimming in the sea.... to find the childrens pet rabbits running free about the land. Impossible to catch alone, I rang for reinforcements ...the girls and there friends turned up, after 15mins of running around the garden the rabbits were safely back in the pen. In the commotion of looking under the wood shed for the rabbits, we discovered our bantam hen Rocky under a pile of rough cut logs, who had been missing for a few days, to our delighted surprise, she had a brood of new born possibly 9 chicks in all and 2 more eggs to hatch, one of which broke it shell, l just after we were moving it in to the nesting box. They would have been unlikely to survive outside the enclosure for long, as snakes and mongoose find they irresistible. We hope the mild weather continues to give them the best chance to survive, this Autumn. Rocky is a variety called Bald neck chickens and is a very healthy Bantam which is a smaller type of bird but great mothers, probably many of her chicks will be double her size as the Cockrel is a very big male, you can just see a yellow one that has her characteristics below.
