Good morning! I told you about a new study that found the percentage of atheists worldwide has dropped by more than half since 1970. If you didn’t believe me, it might be a little easier after last weekend….During his historic visit to Brazil, Pope Francis conducted a farewell mass on Copacabana Beach that drew a crowd estimated at 3 million people. No, that’s not a typo: I said 3 million. That’s three times the size of the crowd that the Rolling Stones drew there in 2006. There was a swarm of humanity in every direction, as far as the eye could see. The Catholic Church has been under attack for years, accused of hypocrisy and covering up scandals. There were those who questioned whether it could survive. But it’s not wise to bet against an institution like that venerable. Francis was an unusual choice for pope: a Jesuit who preaches humility and outreach to the poor and downtrodden, and who practices what he preaches. But he appears to have been the perfect choice. Brazil just showed us three million reasons why.
