Good morning K2 viewers, Dave Salesky KATU here. I hope youre warm and safe as you read this post. Looks like round three of our winter storm could be the knockout blow. Parts of the area are on track for pretty good ice storm. Radar shows the next slug of moisture is coming up the Willamette Valley. The chart on the right is from the weather balloon launched from the Salem Airport this morning. Its spells trouble with a capital T. The surface temperature is 27 degrees. As the balloon climbs so does the temperature to 33 degrees just a couple of thousand feet above the surface. Thats an inversion. Instead of getting colder the atmosphere gets warmer the higher you go. The temperature does drop back below freezing but only several thousand feet higher. The bottom line is precipitation falling into the warmer air will be liquid or close to it, then freeze when it hits the ground. Areas around Salem and south can expect a mix of Freezing Rain, Sleet or Snow. As warmer air keeps pushing north check back through the day. Ill post the timing of the change over from snow to sleet to freezing rain. In the meantime expect another 1 to 3 of snow in the Portland metro area.
