Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen , yesterday the Under 14 - TopicsExpress

Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen , yesterday the Under 14 travelled to Carcavelos in Lisbon for the first round of the XIII a side winter championship .This was the first time that any of the players had played a competetive game on a full size pitch with a full team ( there has not even been the opportunity for a training game owing to the lack of local opposition ,) previously their activity had been within the seven a side tournaments , the game played on a much smaller pitch , and the manner of play being very different . The tournament was programmed as a triangular tournament with the opposition being Escolas de Rugby Galiza and Vitoria de Setubal , however Setubal turned out to be a no show .On what was a very warm afternoon the team entered into play rather lethargically and in the first five minutes of play E R Galiza penetrated the line of defence to scrabble over a try . This was the wake up call Loulé needed and they soon rallied with a tremendous charge by Shane Fegan , closely supported by Lex Keerbergen and William Kemsley , the following kick succesfully converted by Timothy Cartwright, the board standing at E R Galiza 5 v 7 R C Loulé . The two teams fought hard and on several occasions the Galiza backs , well known for their speed and wide play almost circumnavagated the Loulé defence , but some intelligent defending by Connor Fox thwarted this every time . Loulé then lost Timothy Cartwright to a recurring foot injury , and then shortly after a great blindside play from just outside the Galiza 22 , off of the back of a penalty , by William and Lex saw Lex swallow dive past the galiza backs , the following conversion by Vasco Santos rattling off of the inside of the post , then bouncing off of the crossbar and back into the field of play :0 , the score E R Galiza 5 v 12 R C Loulé . As the first half drew to a close and with the Loulé team tiring Galiza with a penetrating play off of a penalty broke through the Loulé defence , the ensuing try being scored in two movements as the player first fell on his back and the rolled over and scored , the referee however allowed the try .The second half saw much of the same action , however as the players tired at the end of the second half some poor defending by Loulé saw Galiza cross the line twice , both tries being converted , the final score , which really didn´t mirror the balanced performance of the two sides , stood at E R Galiza 26 v 12 R C Loulé . Following this and at the suggestion of the host club and due to the absence of Vitoria , Loulé played Galiza in a game of 7´s , and here the history of 7´s played by the Loulé team shined the score at the end being E R Galiza 10 v 35 R C Loulé . The transition from 7´s to XIII a side this season will definitely be a step learning curve for the Under 14´s but is absolutely essential for player developement and XV a side capability as they progresso to the Under 16´s next year and the year after .
