Good morning folks- as the sun rises over East Lancashire on derby-day. The passion surrounding the Burnley v Blackburn fixture is immense with a pure hatred on both sides. Accusations of inbreeding, dubious parenting, cheating and links with the Yorkshire Taliban abound. Even after living in this area for 28 years I still dont quite get the depth of feeling involved. I do remember matches between the womens teams back in the day were equally as hostile- with the infamous battle of the perms going down as one of the most vicious battles ever involving oestrogen. I always tell myself before these fixtures that I dont really have an investment in the outcome and perhaps the best thing for East Lancashire Constabulary would be a draw. However, by kick off, even this outsider gets drawn in. Aware of the feelings of some of the loveliest people I know, I find myself humming the songs I first heard back in the 90s at Darwen Vale. About where I might defacate had I the wings of an eagle, illegitimate people in claret and blue, what will always be King Kennys Blue and White Army and the tune I used while Marathon training as it perfectly matched my ambling pace, Were the famous Blackburn Rovers and were goin to Wembley.... So after all those years of feigning disinterest- Im finally coming out of the closet as a wild Rover! Solidarity with my ex-pupils is what I blame- not least that ball boy with the long hair Jenny Simpson! Xxx
