Good morning ladies. I was asked to explain a relatively common event where a woman feels a vibration sensation in her pelvis similar in sensation to the vibration effect caused by a vibrating cellular telephone. What you are experiencing is called Phantom Vibration Syndrome. It is a fairly common sensation and can occur in 1 in about 15 people. The cause is not specifically known but appears to be a combination of pelvic nerve compression as well as a heighten sense of brain sensory stimulation. The vibration can also extend past the pelvic area down the front or back of the leg and also stimulate the lower back and buttock. The event is also very commonly seen in pregnant patients, along with round ligament pain and sciatic nerve compression. The frequency of the event is patient specific and can occur as often as never to as often as a few times per day lasting seconds to minutes depending on the person. It is not considered to be dangerous, but more of a annoyance. So relax ladies, you are not going crazy! It happens a lot more often than people think. Just be careful when discussing this with your GYN, since most OB/GYNs have never heard of this phenomenon. Sincerely, Dr. Julio Novoa
