Good morning my friendly family. A bright, cheery cold day opens the weekend with us here to live it and I say Thank You Amazing Father. Waking up a bit later today as the bed was just too comfortable this morning. For those of us who were fortunate to grow up in the Rio Grande Valley back in the sixties and seventies, the Valley we knew was one rich with produce fields everywhere you looked. There was an event known back then as the All Valley Vegetable Show and it was held down the street from where we lived in Pharr at the National Guard Armory. I remember this event well as it was the highlight of local growers to show off their best produce. The show featured a white elephant event, and this is the first place I ever got to participate in a cake walk which I thought was pretty cool. The highlight of the event was when you would purchase a brown grocery bag for about 50 cents and then it was, On your mark, get ready and go! where you would be able to fill that bag with all these wonderful vegetables that were laid out and folks would scurry to gather. This was all done in a matter of minutes as there were lots of folks gathering veggies. My brother and I always loved to participate in this event as mama loved to use fresh veggies to cook with. One particular year as I was ready to pack in the veggies in my bag, my eye caught sight of what I considered the golden goose of produce, a cabbage so large it must have weighed at least 10 pounds. The only thought racing in my head as I was waiting for the go ahead was that nobody better take that cabbage cuz it was mine. Well of course nobody wanted a 10 pound cabbage and when it was time, I put my grocery bag aside and jumped on that cabbage. Well just as Jack might have walked in the house when he sold the cow for magic beans, there goes richard, walking down the street proudly with his arms full with a huge cabbage in tow. I give it up to my mama, instead of asking where was all my produce, she must of have seen the pride in my eyes when I plunked down this cabbage that could have fed most of Pharr on her kitchen table. Dont exactly know what she did with all that cabbage, but as I saw that cabbage as the biggest and best, I had to get for the lady whom I considered the best. These my family were the glory days of living in a place rich with fruit and vegetables and I wouldnt give that up for all the tea in China. Okay my family its time to get out there and produce something fun and memorable with your weekend. Have a most colorful and fun day which it will be when you relax and get out there and make it your day.
