Mike Fitzgerald was named Brattleboro police chief last night. Interim Town Manager Patrick Moreland said Fitzgerald stood out during the interview process. Fitzgerald is a Brattleboro native, who joined the department after a 20 year career in the Marine Corps. He most recently served as department Captain. Brattleboro select board members vote in favor of the Living memorial park senior area to be developed for a skateboard park. Board chair David Gartenstien says the town does not have money to help develop the site. Instead, select board members will ask next years town meeting to commit 20 thousand dollars to the project. Monday night’s fire at the Dummerston Congregational church has been declared arson. Vermont state police made the determination, after investigating on Tuesday. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Arson Tip Line at 1-800-32-ARSON (There is up to a $5,000.00 reward for information resulting in an arrest) or the Vermont State Police at the Rockingham Barracks at 802-875-2112. Lower Green Street in Brattleboro has been closed between Retting place and High Street, because of a failed retaining wall. Public works director Steve Barrett says department staff will meet with an engineer today to determine both short and long term repair options. People who buy their health insurance through the Vermont Health Connect website are going to be seeing their rates go up. On Tuesday, the Green Mountain Care Board authorized Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont to increase its rates an average of 7.7 percent while MVP subscribers will see their rates increase 10.9 percent. Blue Cross, the states largest health care insurer with about 65,000 customers enrolled through Vermont Health Connect, had requested an increase of 9.8 percent while MVP asked for 15.3 percent.
