Good news! Clinton and Albion Schools in MSAD 49 are on the list to receive funding for preschool education. Qualifying districts have more than 50 percent of students at the elementary level who participate in the federal lunch program. I agree with Governor LePage that quality preschool experiences include having a child be at home with family. Publicly and privately funded preschools are also a great option for 4 year old children. Preschool experiences must recognize play as a primary form of learning. Thus I agree also with Acting Education Commissioner Tome: ...As those of us who have been fortunate to work with young children know, it’s impossible not to have fun with 4-year-olds and learning activities can be created that are both rigorous and promote play so that social, emotional, physical and intellectual development is fostered.” (Rigorous concerns me a bit when we talk about preschool education, but play is welcomed.) In rule-making, we must guard against equating high-quality programs with traditional academic programs and testing of children. In our region, Pittsfield also received funding.
