Good riddance to bad rubbish. Time to vent. Its very easy to look at a tattoo artists work and be able to ascertain if it is either good or bad. With piercing it is much more difficult for the untrained eye to actually know what IS good. That being said, just because a person is a licensed piercer DOES NOT mean they know what they are doing. All it means is that they have satisfied the state of Alaskas requirements to obtain a license and they have been issued a piece of paper that means they can legally perform piercings in the state. There are no practicals for piercing or tattooing. That means the state has never, and WILL never make sure a piercer can actually PERFORM a piercing, let alone a well placed piercing. They have only been assured that someone who already holds a license is willing to say their apprentice meets the criteria. But if you are trained to pierce by someone who doesnt know what they are doing, then what do you really know when youre done? Pretty much nothing. All artists are not equal, even though they all hold the same license, and the same is true for piercers. We may all share the same license, but I assure you, with piercing its all about who you learn from. I am VERY proud to say that I trained under Master Piercer Kevin McKinley, who studied at The Gauntlet with Jim Ward, the father of modern body piercing. I was thoroughly trained in 2004 and have been piercing and learning and gaining more and more knowledge ever since. So please beware. An unscrupulous person would have a very easy time of paying a licensed piercer to train them so they can legally offer the service. But thats all they are doing; legally offering the service of body piercing. A cheap tattoo isnt good and a good tattoo isnt cheap. A poorly trained, but licensed, piercer is like a criminal with a badge, you think they are safe and helpful, bet theyre really just in it for the dollars and not for the art form. Research your piercer, our work is much more invasive than tattooing! Safety FIRST. RESPECT.
