Good to hear. When the 2011 census was released a few years ago, I was surprised to see Esquimalt lose residents between 2001 and 2011. Esquimalt isnt a small town in Maritimes, its a municipality in an area that is growing rapidly. While most of that growth is occurring in the Westshore (given thats where all the space is), the 4 core municipalities can still capture some of that population growth through densification, which leads to other benefits (boosts to the local economy, larger tax base more people walking+cycling+taking transit due to close proximity to amenities etc). The Esquimalt Village Project is an important first step in stopping the loss of people and businesses in Esquimalt by creating denser, more livable urban areas. There will be challenges. Some residents will object to these changes, and sorting out frivolous from legitimate concerns is a challenge for any council when dealing with development questions. But failure to move forward will only spell the continued decline of Esquimalt that we have been witnessing over the past 10+ years.
