Google is starting to use whether a site is using HTTPS (Thats when you see the green padlock) or not as part of its ranking algorithm. This is to promote secure encrypted connections for all web users. While this is now playing a small part of the algorithm, Google has clearly stated that it will play a larger part. To a point that I suggest that all website owners look into getting a SSL certificate for their site. While there is a yearly cost involved (Around $100 per year) and a small bit of work and cost to get it setup, I believe that this will become a very important part of all websites.
