Goosebump moments from last week in DC, in no particular order: 1. Following the footsteps of MLK from his hotel to the place where he delivered the I Have a Dream speech, then hearing our high school students recite it there. 2. The display containing thousands of Holocaust victims shoes at the Holocaust Museum. It will haunt me forever. 3. Just about everything else at the Holocaust Museum. 4. Having our students meet Congressman John Lewis, one of the greatest figures from the Civil Rights Movement, then seeing video of his speech during the March on Washington while visiting the Smithsonian. 5. Seeing the original Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights and Constitution at the National Archives, and watching a security guard go out of his way to explain the significance of several important artifacts to our students. 6. Seeing the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the Star Spangled Banner, and seeing the original scrap of paper that he scribbled the lyrics on. (Didnt realize there were actually four verses to that song; we just sing the first one.) 7. Reading the Emancipation Proclamation on an interior wall of the Lincoln Memorial with a thunderstorm raging outside. 8. Seeing the 4,048 gold stars displayed at the World War II memorial, each one representing the lives of 100 U.S. servicemen lost in the war. 9. Reading the Declaration of Independence engraved on a wall inside the Jefferson Memorial. 10. Seeing the MLK memorial. It was my first time seeing it, and its a masterpiece. Heres my photo album for the week if you would like to see it: https://facebook/darrin.stineman/media_set?set=a.10204067901953319.1073741836.1097596244&type=1
