Gov. Hickenlooper updates local officials on flood response DENVER — Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 — Gov. John Hickenlooper this morning hosted the first of what will be a weekly Disaster Recovery Call between state and local officials to discuss flood recovery efforts. “The idea behind these is to make sure we all have the same sets of facts, that we are getting information out as quickly as we can and we are as transparent as possible,” Hickenlooper told local officials who joined the call. “All of you out there listening on the call are our eyes and ears and can help us accelerate this recovery dramatically.” The governor provided updates that included: • The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has opened almost half of the closed roads with 16 closures remaining. • CDOT announced the opening of Highway 14 through the Poudre Canyon from Highway 287 (Ted’s Place) to Cameron Pass. • Public assistance in Boulder and Larimer counties was approved. • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with state and local officials, completed 12 infrastructure assessments of public water and wastewater systems, additional assessments are underway. • More than $22.1 million has been approved in disaster grants for homeowners and renters in Colorado. • Since the Sept. 14 disaster declaration, more than 16,800 households in Colorado have applied for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). • Xcel Energy is making significant progress in returning power, with many areas expected to be restored today through Friday. Natural gas pilots are being relit in all communities. • Current evacuation number is 5,958. • There are now 1,059 FEMA staff in Colorado. The governor was joined on the call this morning by various Cabinet members and emergency management officials. Communication is happening daily all levels of government; these weekly calls will give everyone a chance to come together in one place to receive information and ask questions.
