Governor LePage after meeting with representatives from the Grand Lake Guides Association and realizing that the necessary environmental impact studies were not completed and alewives were not native to the St. Croix River Basin did not sign or endorse the bill. However, the bill still became law in the Spring of 2013. Illegal introduction of alewives to the St. Croix River Occurred in the early 1980’s and eventually destroyed the fishery in Spednic Lake causing the closure of that body of water in 1988. Spednic Lake remains closed as of today to the taking of bass and is only now starting to recover after 25 years! Now the State of Maine, has once again authorized the illegal introduction of alewives to the upper St. Croix River. Alewives are an invasive species, since they were never native to the St. Croix River Basin. This violates several Maine State laws! Additionally, the Tomah Mayfly, a registered threatened species in the State of Maine, located in the Grand Falls Flowage will be eliminated. The Tomah Mayfly has been called a “living fossil” by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, as it is one of the rarest species of mayfly in the world.
