Governor Olusegun Mimiko Of Ondo State Signed Controversial Pension Scheme Into Law by Sahara Reporters Amidst Controversy trailing the introduction of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) to the workforce of Ondo State, Governor Olusegun Mimiko today signed the bill which was passed into law by the Lawmakers of the State. Governor Mimiko said that the Bill was passed and signed into law for the overall interest of civil servants who will benefit immensely from the scheme. The governor informed that the signing of the scheme into law would further help government to deepen its expansion of provision of socio-economic services to the people of the state. He stated that the introduction of the bill to the lawmakers for passage became imperative because of the many difficulties faced by retirees while assessing their pension. Mimiko, who accepted that the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) attracted protests and much controversies revealed that it was as a result of poor information and misinformation on its benefits to the workers. “Let me say that this Scheme attracted some controversy but this has been due to lack of appropriate information or misinformation or both. “Without a well organized Contributory Pension Scheme, it becomes increasingly difficult for workers to be able to enjoy their gratuity and pension” Mimiko told the gathering. He said government will be open minded and transparent in the administering of the Scheme with a vowed that there would be total accountability to the workers in accessing their pension right. Mimiko further added that his administration would never bowed to any pressure concerning the quiet revolution currently going on the state and begged the workers to key into the scheme. In his address to top government management service at the Cocoa banquet hall of the government house in Akure, Mimiko disclosed revealed that the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) is matter of law which every workforce in the state ‘must’ key into. SaharaReporters had reported penultimate week that workers in their numbers armed with placards protested at the State House of Assembly over the introduction of the bill in the state. Many of the Civil Servants had also alleged that the introduction of the bill is to further ‘improvished’ them with a vow to use every legal means within their capacity to stop the State government from singing it into law by grounding all its activities if what they described as “hurriedly and forceful commencement of implementation of the scheme” without their consent was not reversed. They felt the lawmakers of the State House of Assembly had done a ‘shoddy job’ on the bill and hurriedly passed the it into law before shortly going into six (6) weeks recess. Mimiko commended the Labour leaders in the state for their patient and cooperation since the inception of his administration. Earlier, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Eyitayo Jegede praised the State lawmakers for quickly passage of the Scheme stating that it would go a long way in helping them in future. Reporters could not confirm the reaction of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Committee (JNC) in the state who were in a close door meeting in deliberation over the assent of the Scheme into by the State Governor.
