Govt plans to upgrade Shiradi Ghat: If the government keeps its word, Shiradi Ghat could soon have better roads. The state government on Tuesday promised to find a permanent solution to the unmotorable stretch between Sakleshpur and Gundya. At present, it takes two hours to cover this 46-km stretch. Public works department minister HC Mahadavappa on Tuesday told the legislative council that the Centre has sanctioned Rs 95 crore to develop the 46-km stretch of Shiradi Ghat. The ghat connecting Bangalore to Mangalore has been in pathetic shape; promises by all previous governments have only remained on paper. Of the 46-km stretch, 13.6 km will be rigid concrete pavement. The rest will be asphalted, Mahadavappa said. He added that the government had expedited the process of rebuilding the ghat. With the 46 km stretch from Saklespur to Gundya on national highway 48 taking two hours to cover. Replying to a question from Kota Srinivasa Poojari (BJP), and four participants had come forward for concrete works, while only one contractor had evinced interest for asphalting. Mahadevappa said a green bypass for the Shiradi tunnel project has been proposed by Karnataka, with financial assistance from Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA). It includes five tunnels, each 7.7- km long and costing Rs 2,200 crore. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up the project of building four lanes on NH 48, the minister said. Mahadevappa also said a proposal has been submitted to the Centre to upgrade Bangalore-Mysore-Bantwal state highway to a national highway, considering the increase in density of vehicles plying here.
