Gramsci (2): The collaborationist and reformist spirit must be destroyed; we must set down exactly and precisely what we mean by state. . . . It is necessary to establish and to make it widely understood that the socialist state ... is not a continuation of the bourgeois state, that it is not an evolution of the capitalist state which is made up of three powers-the executive, parliament, and the judiciary. The socialist state is, rather, a continuation and a systematic development of the workers organizations and the local bodies which the proletariat has already been able to bring into existence within the individualistic regime. The immediate task of the proletariat, therefore, must not favor the extension of state power and state interventions; instead, its goal should be to de-center the bourgeois state and to increase the autonomy of local and trade union bodies beyond the reach of regulatory laws.
