Grandchildren and backpacking- One of the most memorable backpacking experiences I can remember was taking my oldest grand daughter backpacking - She was a sophomore in college -she had never been camping nor backpacking - we went a a three day trip - Very much a southern bell I was not sure how she would do... She did great, it was summer , no showers or spas, just the cold clear mountain stream water to wash up with. Bugs. - had to use bug spray. Carrying a pack , walking a rough trail.. But the the real test was a major series of Thunderstorms - the wind kick up to some 60 miles per hour in gusts , lighting , rain ( as we found out going home trees were down over many of the roads ). She held up like a champ - impressed her Grand Father- Her big deal was having enough Starbucks Hot Chocolate . Take your grandchildren hiking and backpacking its a great experience for you and them.
