Grandma Ruby recently found my mom’s recipe for gumbo. It gives you an idea of the sense of humor they shared. Crab gumbo By Nita Melvin, for her friend Ruby Mae Pendrey One stewing hen, a real old tough one Cook until it falls apart Take out of the broth and pick out the bones Put the chicken back in, if you want to ½ cup of shortening and 1/1/2 tbs flour – brown in cast iron skillet until black and add to broth Add some okra, corn, celery, peppers, tomatoes and cook for awhile Add shrimp and blue crab, salt and pepper Cook until done. Serve over rice.
