Great Barrier Reef dredging goes to federal court Dredging of the Barrier Reef is set to see the environment minister fronting court to defend the world’s largest coal port. Approval for dredging of the Great Barrier Reef will see environment minister Greg Hunt face court to defend the worlds largest coal port, after a legal challenge was mounted this week. The dredging of Abbot Point to allow for coal exports from the Galilee Basin represents a major infrastructure project. But there is increasing concern the reef cannot weather the degradation, and that Hunt approved the cheapest and dirtiest option in the face of alternatives that would have saved the marine park from dredging.
