Great dinner tonight with a few glitches. Yesterday I was in New Bedford and after a nice lunch at Churrascaria Novo Mundo, I stopped at a small market with a great seafood selection on Cove St by the hurricane barrier. There were three of us waiting and two people behind the counter. I deferred to the others as I made up my mind. The 60-something Chinese woman before me bought 6 mackerel, 5 flounder, a monkfish, and something else Ive forgotten, most of which she wanted cleaned. (I was also behind her at the register, where she bought about $60 worth of lottery tickets. By the time I was served, there were about 5 others waiting. I bought 2 mackerel for about $3.50 at $2.99/lb and had them cleaned. I was reminiscing about my first meal in Europe over 30 years ago with Bernhard Münzer at a beer festival in Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria, where I had mackerel grilled on an open fire and too much beer. I found a recipe that called for marinating 24 hours. I included the ingredients I had and omitted the rest, and marinated for the hour I had. Oil, salt, pepper, lime juice, garlic, onion, parsley, sage, basil, thyme, rosemary, mint, and hot peppers (the last six from my garden). Made a side of guacamole (no, I didnt have that in Germany!) because I had the ingredients. Boiled some potatoes and started a charcoal fire in the grill. The fire was ready and the potatoes were roasting in goose fat in a pan in the oven, when I realized that (once again) I didnt know where my fish-shaped grill implement was. A search (twice) of the cabinets that were large enough to hold it wasnt successful, but finally on tiptoe I saw something that might be it way in the back of the cabinet over the oven. Luck! While I grilled the fish, I put the marinade with a few chopped tomatoes in a pot and cooked them down, and ran them through the food processor to make a sauce. Then I decided to have wine instead of beer. Possibly the best rosé Ive ever had. Lamé Delisle Boucard, Domaine Les Chesnaies, 2012 Bourgueil, Loire Valley Cabernet Franc. Fabulous. Probably around $14. The last glitch was my usual habit of cooking something early in the week that produces smelly trash that wont be picked up until next Monday. Maybe I should just toss the bones into the bay.
