Great last two days of birding. My wife and daughter are out of town visiting her aunt, so life gets pretty boring. So what do bored people do on unseasonably cool and refreshing summer days in VA? They go birding of course! I took two trips out Thurs and Fri mornings to specific places looking for specific birds, and Im happy to report that I bagged both of them! Thurs I went to Meadowood Recreational Area for the first time and it is now one of my new favorite places to bird: a large meadow backing up to an even larger forest = great habitat for some cool birds! I saw 6 Blue Grosbeaks and a dozen Indigo Buntings on the day, but the real treat was the bird I was stalking, our teams first ever Summer Tanager! Life bird #245 for me! Then yesterday morning I went to Occoquan NWR determined to finally add a King Rail to my life list. Nature did not disappoint as I both heard and saw two separate rails for life bird #246! This brings me to 195 on the year. Now on to Illinois for some grassland birds and Pennsylvania for more warblers! Jared
