Great news from the front - we are making a difference: the tide is turning for our oceans! In the first grocery store report card six years ago, not a single one of the top 20 grocery stores in the US received a passing grade when it came to sustainable seafood. These stores were rarely held accountable for using suppliers that plundered marine ecosystems, but you spoke up for the health of our oceans and now we see what we can do together: This year, thanks to our efforts, Trader Joe’s has stopped selling more than half of its unsustainable seafood products, and even Walmart has begun offering a more sustainable canned tuna option at its 3,000 super-stores nationwide. Target and Trader Joe’s have committed to keep genetically modified ‘frankenfish’ salmon off the shelves. And Safeway continues to sell responsibly caught tuna at prices competitive with the worst overfishing offenders. These changes make a huge difference. Switching to responsible fishing methods means saving the lives of tens of thousands of marine mammals, sea turtles, rays and other marine life caught as bycatch each year.
