Greek elections on the 25th of January ... the very hopeful among us hope that a victory for Syriza, an ultra-leftist anti-EU party, will pull them out of the Euro and start a domino effect ... A Euro collapse probably isnt likely, but its fairly certain that anti-democratic parties will gain the highest percentage of votes in Europe since the Weimar republic tumbled (that is, if we count the Spanish Partido Popular and Hungarys Fidesz as somewhat supportive of democracy). In Greece Syriza has around a 33% following, the Nazis of Golden Dawn has fallen to around 7% (and most of their leadership is in prison) and the Greek communist party receives around 6% ... or a total of 46% of the vote against democracy (more if you add the rightwing anti-EU populists of Independent Greeks at 3-4%). Personally I have no great love for democracy and do believe a Syriza lead government would maintain it in some form or the other anyway - theyre a 13 party coalition of Trotskist, maoist and all sorts of other weirdos, though they have downplayed their more radical plans lately to widen the net of voters. Despite that, their pledge to default on all austerity debts and nationalise various forms of production might well lead to a Euro exit and a move towards their actual ideological stance ... Either way, these are all votes for either totalitarian right or left wing parties ... I predict a violently tumultuous january round the Akropolis ...
