Greetings Fellow 2014 New York Marathoners: I hope that your trainings going well.:-) With less than 5 months away from the big day, I thought it would be a good idea to keep each other up to date on our progress and share some personal tips to motivate one another along the way.:-) Tonight, in the magnificent city of Vancouver, Canada, I commenced my first marathon training clinic with The Running Room which I found to be both challenging and inspiring!:-) I ran along side three other seasoned half marathoners and marathoners (in the 5 minute twenty second per kilometre group) in a fast paced 9.7 km seawall race that always takes my breath away in more ways than one.:-) Having spoken to Leo Tang about his plan to start up with a running clinic in Mississauga this week, he convinced me to mix things up a bit and deviate a little from my solo running routine.:-) Seeking advice from the experts and implementing their tried and true methods is going to be key in helping me to mentally, emotionally and physically prepare for what lies ahead. Additionally, I have found the following tips to be instrumental in keeping me on track: 1.) Setting weekly goals is a great way to hold yourself accountable. Having been an educator for a number of years, I often work with my students on goal planning so I decided that it was time to more consistently put in to practice what I preach.:-) Last week, I set a goal to run 45 km so I split the distance in to three 15 km runs and yes, I attained my objective.:-) This week Ive set out to run 50 km and thus far Ive accomplished 21.2 km with another run on the way tomorrow morning.:-) 2.) Cross training between runs is essential for strength training and preventing injury. I started an amazing online medicine ball training program last fall that was brilliantly designed by my dear friend and coach Sasha Gier, a Whistler B.C. resident who used to train Olympians in Russia where he was born and raised. He has been an incredible support in my journey towards optimal health and wellness and I attribute a lot of my personal transformation to his expertise as a coach and no nonsense approach to getting in shape. I guarantee that his program as well as his phenomenal coaching skills, even from a distance, will change your life as it did mine.:-) For your information, the website address is siberiansandbox. My testimonial is there if you care to read it and I encourage and challenge all of you to enrol for a 2 week free trial.:-) Sasha is in the process of updating all of his videos from 45 minute workouts to 30 minute, more intense ones making it easier for everyone to make time in their busy lives for exercise.:-) Youll be truly amazed at the transformation you see in yourself on a physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and professional level in as little as 3 weeks! 3.) Proper nutrition is paramount and eating healthfully in accordance with our activity levels is key. I have been working on getting back to the way I used to eat most of my life which is to consume smaller, nutrient dense meals and healthy snacks in between. Having commenced the Isagenix nutritional cleansing plan almost 2 months ago under the advise of a dear colleague and friend Denise Olson, I am happy to say that Im back on track and have achieved amazing results, including increased energy, a leaner, more toned physique and quicker recovery time between workouts..:-) Check out isamovie to see the benefits that Isagenix is guaranteed to bring to your life! I have also found that taking supplements on a regular basis such as a tried and true products called Wobenzym N, Turmeric by New Chapters, Recovery Accelerator by Vega for inflammation and a simple multi-vitamin by Sisu-all effective products for keeping the immune system strong.:-) 4.) Spending time in the presence of positive people who encourage you to be your best self and even those who you aspire to be like is also imperative. Ive had the fortunate opportunity to run with my good friend Angela Kelso whom I met almost three years ago at the annual Terry Fox Run. Her spirit, tenacity and dedication to running is truly awe inspiring and at the age of 71 years of age, she often times runs circles around me! She is a true inspiration! She also introduced me to The Forever Young running group who are all seasoned runners and with whom Ive had the blessed opportunity to run on occasion.:-) I am overall very blessed to have the encouragement of family and friends alike.:-) 5.) Award yourself for your achievements along the way. This past week I ate gelato three times.:-) Ok, a little excessive I have to admit but I gave myself permission-one for every run that I accomplished!:-) I will leave you with my favourite quote of the day: Its important to know that at the end of the day its not the medals you remember. What you remember is the process -- what you learn about yourself by challenging yourself, the experiences you share with other people, the honesty the training demands -- those are things nobody can take away from you whether you finish twelfth or youre an Olympic Champion. -Silken Laumann, Canadian Olympian I look forward to hearing about everyones personal journeys and tips.:-) Wishing you all an awesome week! Hugs and best wishes, Leah
