Greetings all. Wanted to share a home run lesson we had today. To fram this, I have to say that all of my students are black and come from high poverty areas. And the recent events surrounding Ferguson and Eric Garner have been weighing heavy on their minds of late. So today I decided to do a movie talk-ish (we didnt watch the video and do this) assignment about the Eric Garner video. We described what happened in Spanish, what our opinions were (qué piensas tú ... debe de ... qué pasó después), and debated about it in Spanish. It was hands down the best lesson of the year so far. TONS of comprehensible input, great PQAs, and NO disruptions whatsoever. Kids who were very apathetic about class engaged in it and asked questions for the first time all year. I was really nervous about doing a CI-based lesson about something so serious and near to hearts, but it went great.
