Growing up in southern New England in the 60s we spent a lot of time at my Grandmother’s house during the summer. She played Red Sox games on the radio…every…single….day. I can still hear her yelling at or cheering Boston pitchers in my brain. I became a Red Sox fan by osmosis. Everyone else in our family was a Yankees fan, except me and Grandma. I still have 2 old LP albums full of radio/TV audio clips of the 1967 “Impossible Dream” season and the 1975 season that ended in what was probably the greatest World Series in history – even though Cincinnati won- Game 6 among the greatest games ever played in baseball history (go to 3:26:00 of the video to see Fisk’s home run to win it youtube/watch?v=SQzL34qH7uo). Yaz (Carl Yastrzemski) was my hero and I idolized Pudge Fisk, Dwight Evans, and Rick Burleson and got to watch the rookie seasons of Fred Lynn and Jim Rice. I can still see in my mind the twisting-look up at the sky- delivery of Luis Tiant on the pitcher’s mound. The 1986 World Series…ughhhh..I still get ill thinking of that ground ball to first base in Game 6. World Series wins in 2004 and 2007….FINALLY!!! I pretty much stopped watching baseball after the 1981 player’s strike. But you don’t just stop being a Red Sox fan. So with the Sox in Game 1 of the World Series tonight I’ll have the TV on and I might glance at it once in a while. But my mind will be filled with sounds from that radio playing in my grandmother’s kitchen…..
