Growing up, my dad played his guitar. It was an Ovation. It was beautiful, still is. He had me sing for him while he played. He instilled the love of guitar and singing in me. Most of the songs he played I had never heard anywhere else except from my father and as I grew up a few would play on the radio and I would recognize them bringing back memories of my childhood. They sounded much different than I learned them. As Simon would say, I made them my own. Some of those songs are, Lemon Tree, Memories, Autumn Leaves, House of The Rising Sun, Malegeña, La Llarona, Beatles songs and many others from the 50s and 60s. The Spanish songs my mother sang and I learned them so I could sing them too. By this she taught me how to pronounce spanish vowels making it easier when I took it in Highschool. (We were not a bilingual family, that was secret code reserved for my parents. So of course I wanted to learn.) My exposure to beautiful guitar music paved the way for me to instill this in my boys. My 3 oldest sons all play guitar, sing, and write their own music and lyrics and perform/ed. As did/do I. We all play and sing with passion and love of music. It wasnt until recent years I found out my father was shy?! I was surprised and disappointed because I have wanted to show him off to family and friends but it is for his own personal enjoyment and his family. I will sneak record him some day so that I can have forever. (Hes not on Facebook so lets keep this plot between us, k?) This song I heard today reminded me of love and passion found in life. It felt great to hear it. I felt the beauty of life and friendship and all the goodness that surrounds me. Its 9 minutes long, maybe too long for some but for me, I didnt want it to end.
