Guardians of the Galaxy Review – Spoiler Free Last night and - TopicsExpress

Guardians of the Galaxy Review – Spoiler Free Last night and went to go watch Hercules with Linda, Anthony and William, but the times had changed so instead we watched Guardians of the Galaxy a day earlier then we had planned. I will preface the following with the fact I am not very familiar with the GotG comics so this is based solely on the content of the movie itself (as movie reviews really should be). Let’s begin with that fact that this is one of the best Marvel movies to date. For me this exceeded the Avengers to tie up the number one Marvel slot with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. First the casting was spot on throughout. The individual Guardians were exceptionally well represented. Chris Pratt nailed the character they were aiming for with this iteration of Star-Lord. Zoe Saldana proves once again she is the go to girl for all sci-fi as Gamora. Surprisingly Dave Bautista did a fine job as Drax. While it wasn’t much of a reach range wise he was still more then successful within the context of the role. Bradley Cooper did phenomenal as Rocket, and never did you really here his voice. Lastly Vin Diesel was able to bring life to a character (Groot) that says only three words with differing inflections for emotion. I do not wish to short change the other cast members as Lee Pace did a great job as Ronan and Michael Rooker nailed Yondu through and through. Throughout the movie each scene that had Groot and Rocket in it were almost completely stolen by them as they were so well done, not only with the dialogue, but also the CGI. This is one of the few times that I have seen completely CG characters blend in seamlessly with the actual actors and sets. I could see a demand rising for a spin-off containing just the two of them. The dialogue throughout is fun and witty, and at times borderline corny. It’s a fine line they walk throughout and nail it with great timing and delivery. Almost as important as the characters and their dialogue is the soundtrack for the film. Each song is used in such a way that the soundtrack almost becomes a character in and of itself. These are all classic songs which are written into the film as an active piece rather than some background noise and while the younger audience may not know them, they will still enjoy them. This is a film about irreverent anti-heroes put into circumstances that force them to work together. While they obviously become a team, each remains true to their own character throughout. Never does the script sacrifice those very unique attitudes to force a plot to go a certain way. Marvel has also used this movie as a vehicle to introduce a much more expanded universe from the previous films. They upped the ante in the number of differing types of aliens and beings as well as advanced a previously seen story point within the Marvel Cineverse. It will be interesting to see what they do further as James Gunn has already announced a second one will be created and a rumor of some parts in the Avengers 2 that could cause some major ripples throughout the Marvel movies. This group of “jackasses” and “losers” are a lovable band that is fun to watch and experience. The film itself is a joy to watch and really plays up the uniqueness of the cast of characters. I suggest you watch it in IMAX if possible for the full immersive experience.
