Guess what, Mr. Duncan? Most of us white (or black, or Hispanic, or Asian) suburban (or urban or rural) moms (or dads, or other caregivers) are smarter than the average bear, and we know the problem doesnt lie with our kids or with our kids schools or teachers. It has to do with the fact that kids are under an unbelievable amount of stress to learn material that is presented too quickly and that is, in many cases, developmentally inappropriate. You can accelerate instruction, but you cant accelerate development. In most cases, teaching a child material that is one or two grade levels ahead is not going to give that child some kind of edge in the world of college and careers. Instead, they will feel mostly frustration and feelings of failure because they are trying to memorize material that they may not truly have the developmental capacity to fully understand. What might give them an edge is to have time to just be children...to play, imagine, create...instead of spending hours preparing to take tests and then hours taking tests whose results show us what we already knew: that the material was developmentally inappropriate to begin with. Dont even get started with the moms of America, Mr. Duncan, because when it comes to our children, we will ALWAYS stand up for what is in their best interest.
