Guidance wanted. Often in discussion here, the matter of free verge collections comes up, and how Garbologie should work with Councils to try to do better. We tried that with the Town of Cottesloe a few months ago, but found ourselves blocked in our efforts. You can see more about that story in the link (which in turn links back to an earlier post). It gets interesting because there is a new opportunity, this time with the City of Fremantle. Their tender documents are here: fremantle.wa.gov.au/cityoffremantle/Tenders. Tenders close on the 25th of July. If you skim through them, youll see that the documents want all rubbish collected to go to landfill (unless otherwise nominated), and that there is to be no sorting on the verge. Now Fremantle has been one of the great supporters of mattress recycling, and so we are sure that they will nominate that mattresses need to be recycled. Its not in the tender docs, but no doubt it will happen. What is difficult is that there is no consideration of doing a verge collection to reduce waste to landfill. We would love to see a few trucks travel in convoy, sorting rubbish as its removed from the street so that it can be easily resold or recycled. The tender docs dont permit this. To make this service happen, we need to put up a non-conforming tender. That has to be accompanied by a conforming tender. So two submissions. Then we try to convince officers. Then perhaps Council. All of which is work for an outcome that is far from assured. What do you think? Is it worth it?
