Guidelines against deforestation being drafted, says PS The government is in the process of consulting National Land Commission to come up with guidelines against deforestation, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Principal Secretary Fred Segor has said. Segor said the guidelines will also provide for protection of water catchments areas, land against degradation, and preservation of soil fertility. He said the government is committed to conserve the environment and engage Kenyans in tree planting in order to achieve a tree cover of at least 10 percent of land as per international standards. Speaking today during tree planting session at the ministry’s veterinary farm in Ngong, Principal Secretary Fred Segor said environmental conservation efforts are threatened by human activities like logging and charcoal burning. Segor encouraged Kenyans to replace trees they cut and even plant more for future use. “It is important to appreciate that environmental protection and conservation is the responsibility of all of us. Environmental sustainability requires that we utilize the environment to meet our current needs while at the same time preserving for future generations, and as a ministry, we are working towards ensuring that we achieve our goals,” said Segor. On Christmas and New Year festivities, Veterinary Services Director Juma Ngeiuwa urged Kenyans to be cautious and buy dairy meat at recognized places to avoid contacting diseases from livestock. “I urge all veterinary officers to carry out inspection of meat because it can transmit diseases and we have sent our officers to the grassroots to carry out the duty,” said Ngeiuwa. He added that they are doing research on vaccines in order to make the treatment of livestock more effective and avoid loss of animals as witnessed in the past. “We tested a vaccine on rift valley fever which is safe and has been used in South Africa and we have realized that it works well, we are yet to register and approve it,” he said.
