Gunmen kill top media executive in Kaduna Unknown gunmen last Friday night invaded the residence of Yunus Adam, the General Manager of Kaduna based weekly newspaper, The New Democrat and shot him to death. This was even as the Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Audu Nuhu Bajoga was almost moved to tears when he visited villages in Sanga Local Government Area at the weekend without meeting the villagers. The villagers, it was learnt, were in refugee camps, refusing to return home for fear of another attack, following recent killings in southern Kaduna. The gunmen, believed to be hired assassins, according to an eyewitness were seven in number when they stormed Adam’s house at about 10 pm. The eyewitness added that one of the gunmen wearing face mask fired at Adam, leaving him in the pool of his blood in his residence at Ungwan Dosa area of Kaduna metropolis. The Kaduna State Police command spokesman, SP Lawan Aminu said it was a case of armed robbery, and that no arrest has been made at the time of filing this report. Aminu said on telephone; “It was a case of armed robbery, we have confirmed it. The robbers demanded for some items, and the man was shot dead. We are yet to make any arrest”. However, the eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the deceased had earlier returned to his house from evening prayers after breaking the Ramadan fast, when the hoodlums took him unawares. The New Democrat is owned by Senator Ahmed Aruwa, a two-term Senator (from 1999 to 2007), representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District. The Deputy Governor, an indigene of southern Kaduna was said to have been shaken at the sight of carnage. Addressing the deputy governor in one of the communities visited, the District Head of Nando in Sanga Local Government Area, Elisha Umoru called on the federal and state governments to station a permanent security post in the area to prevent further attacks and give the people the confidence to come back to their communities. According to him, “18 persons were killed during the first attack, while another 45 were killed during the second attack on our communities. “The Fulanis are the ones that attacked us because, they have been living with us, but they have all left our communities. Even their chief left about two months before they started attacking us. “When he left, I called him to ask why he packed out of the community, and he said, he doesn’t want to stay in the area again. And before you know it, the attack started”. On his part, the deputy governor assured the people of adequate security to curtail future attacks, adding “As some of the villagers have confirmed, soldiers are now here with the people. They come around at night, and go back in the morning. “I want to call on all those that have fled their homes for fear of further attacks to come back and continue with their daily activities as government has promised to provide adequate security in the areas prone to attacks. “For those whose houses have been destroyed, government is also working on modalities for their resettlement, so that they can pursue their means of livelihood”. Sanga Local Government Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Adamu disclosed that over seven villages have been attacked in the area, leaving not less than 160 persons dead, and over 24,000 displaced with many of them scattered in the five Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) while others are staying with relatives. He however, called on the people to return to their communities as government has put in place measures to ensure their safety. PRIME CHRONICLE
