Guy v the Rabbits - Final Match Report: In Nevil Shutes - TopicsExpress

Guy v the Rabbits - Final Match Report: In Nevil Shutes apocalyptic novel, On The Beach, as humanity dies under the toxic fallout clouds of its own destruction members of a Melbourne gentlemans club bemoan the rumours that only rabbits survive to bounce on our graves. A glimpse of this post-apocalyptic world was visible today in Guys back garden as two rabbits Coco, dark coloured as the name suggests but from his rotund appearance more keen on the lettuce than he should be, and Leah, a more feisty character whos cross garden runs punched holes in Guys defence for much of the first half, ran amok among the once neat and ordered rows of flowers and vegetables. Both sides started brightly but it was the visitors who seemed to have an extra spring in their step in the early stages. Coco and Leah exchanged places fluidly down the left wing, moving from a 1-1 formation with Coco playing just off Leah as the spearhead of attack but cleverly Coco, lacking for pace, dropped back into more of a sweeper role as Guy pushed forward. As the half wore on the bunnies increasing resorted to playing in the shadows, drawing Guy in before springing forward on the counter-attack with blistering cross garden runs. Suffering somewhat from the nettle stings which combating this tactic brought on Guy was only too happy to hear the half time whistle and get out of the sun for a cup of tea. There must have been some stern words spoken in the dressing room as when Guy came back out for the second half the balance began to swing away from the bunnies. Deploying a training ground routine Guy started to use a big stick to unseat the rabbits from the undergrowth, forcing them to play at a higher tempo and just after the hour mark the strain began to show as Coco was cornered and removed from the field leaving an increasingly tired Leah to face Guy alone. Despite a short break while the stewards dealt with a pitch invasion by next doors dog Leah couldnt force the game into extra time and with five minutes left on the clock Guy pulled off the decisive move. After a period of patient build up play involving laying a trail of lettuce leaves to the gap in the fence and some probing uses of the stick the rabbit found itself caught out of position and Guy was able to tap the rabbit into the open goal. Speaking immediately after the game Guy had only words of praise for Leahs performance. She started really brightly and caused us a lot of trouble early on, he said. If she works a bit on her stamina I can see her being a real star of the future. Leah wasnt available for comment but in an interview with Adrian Chiles of ITV later Coco said of Guys performance nom nom nom nom nom.
