Guys!!! In one week begins the single greatest thing to ever hit cinemas. For real! The Roxy Theater is doing a Hayao Miyazaki retrospective! Miyazaki is one of my favorite directors of all time, and he will be awarded with one of the Academys Governor Awards (lifetime awards) this November. His are the most imaginative films you will ever see. The characters are some of the most fun and/or fascinating you will ever meet. His style allows you to choose to read into his multiplicity of deeper meanings, or just tag along for the ride. The animation is some of the most captivating artwork you will ever see, and so to see it on the big screen will be absolutely stunning. All ten* of the films directed by Hayao Miyazaki will be played, and it will run through October and November. You definitely cannot say of Miyazaki films if youve seen one, youve seen them all, so I highly recommend watching as many of them as you can. The first film in the series is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It is at times epic, at times delightful (see clip below), and at times truly bizarre – but always beautiful and poignant. Its playing Wed. Oct. 1st @ 8pm and Sun. Oct. 5th @ 4pm. (SIDE NOTE: Many of Miyazakis films are suitable for the whole family, but Nausicaä is set in a feuding, post-devastating-war, future earth and so contains the violence one might expect in that context.) *Technically, he directed eleven. But in order to keep the series within the months of Oct & Nov, it leaves out his first film, The Castle of Cagliostro. Though a brilliant action-adventure, its a bit of a black sheep in terms of tone and style. Check it out to rent, though. Steven Spielberg supposedly called it The greatest adventure film of all time, and although that quote is questionable I do think Castle of Cagliostro has a claim to being just that. To those of you who have actually read this entire rant: I applaud your patience and/or fellow enthusiasm. Bravo!
