Gwent League – Results from Blaise Castle and Overall Results: The results from Blaise Castle (Saturday 1st March 2014) for the age groups and the overall results are now on the Gwent League web-site at gwent-league.org.uk/2013/res135.htm . I must begin by saying that the Team Managers have played a significant part in increasing club participation in this league over the past 3 years. No individual has done more than Chris Elson and it is a fitting tribute to his efforts that the club won both the Senior Men’s and Senior Ladies events overall. There have been noticeable inroads made in the age groups and whilst this has yet to be seen in terms of medals won a good base is being built which I am sure will be the foundations for future medals. Under-11 Boys Aiden Oscroft led the under-11 boys home at Blaise Castle in ninth place in 6:21 just two places and two seconds in front of Otto Kingston (eleventh in 6:23), with Caleb Owen fourteenth in 6:26, Fenn Willoughby twenty-third in 6:42 and Harry Hughes twenty-ninth in 6:49 the club actually fielded a full team with a reserve. The result was third team with 195 points behind Westbury Harriers (218 points) and Cardiff Archers (206 points). Definitely something to build on for next winter. Overall Caleb Owen was the highest placed individual in ninth place with 275 points, while the team were eighth with 578 points. A big thank you to Ali Hurford who has added the under-11 boys to her duties as well as looking after the under-13 boys. Under-11 Girls There were 75 finishers at Blaise Castle and for the first time the club had two athletes running Leyla Lyons and Saioa Galvin. Leyla was fifty-fifth (8:15) and Saioa sixty-sixth in 9:05. Both will have learnt enormously from the experience and lets hope we see them back racing cross-country next winter. Although not on the team results I think their 34 points would put them thirty-fourth overall. Under-13 Boys Jasper Eddison led the under-13 boys home at Blaise in seventh place in 9:26, with Nathan Merchant twelfth in 9:42. Stan Harding Hill (twentieth in 10:03) and Ted Willoughby (twenty-third in 10:05) completed the A team. They were supported by Harry Feehily (forty-sixth in 11:04), Dan Marshall (forty-eighth in 11:13) and Robert Kiekuth (fiftieth in 11:17) as sixty-two runners finished. The ‘A’ Team were third on the day with 194 points behind Wells (231) and North Somerset (220) as they finished with a creditable fifth place overall. The ‘B’ Team were eighteenth out of twenty-nine teams across the season. Under-13 Girls Nancy Dineen finished an excellent sixth place in 10:10 ahead of Jess Frazer (eighth in 10:35) and Olivia Crofts (nineteenth in 10:56). Emily Moore closed in the team in twenty-fourth place in 11:03 as sixty-six runners finished. This gave them second place (211 points) behind Swansea Harriers (222 points) on the day and a very respectable fourth place over the season just three points behind bronze medalists Westbury Harriers. Well done girls a great season under new Team Manager Paul Owen. Under-15 Boys The graduation of Ali’s Under-13 Army from last year gave Dave Bedwell’s under-15 boy’s team numbers and at Blaise there were great runs from Anton Mills and Hugh Sadler and both will still be in the age group next year. Anton was fourth in 11:12 only 6 seconds off the leader (what would he have done with two shoes on?); Hugh Sadler was only six seconds behind as he finished sixth in 11:18. Jack Fowler was third scorer in twenty-first place in 12:32 before a rush of red and white as Otis Harding-Hill (twenty-third in 12:42), Kyle Haynes (twenty-fourth in 12:54), Billy Cochrane (twenty-fifth in 13:28) and Tom Snell (twenty-sixth in 13:34) crossed the line in a rush. Overall Hugh Sadler was third individual with 224 points – the same score as second placed George Marshall and only 9 points behind individual winner Rhys Jones of Cardiff. Anton Mills was eighth individual over the season scoring 182 points. Overall the team finished runners-up to North Somerset – although there do appear to be some scoring inaccuracies they won’t affect the overall outcome of the team places. The ‘B’ team are currently shown as eighth but should move up to seventh once the Gwent League realise that it was physically impossible for Team Bath C to score 270 points in the final fixture when having the first four athletes – which they certainly did not have – would only have scored 122 points! Under-15 Girls This is an age group where we need to find some athletes for next winter – so if you know anyone who would like to join please point them in our direction. Hannah Dyer was the sole club finisher at Blaise, coming home in twenty-fifth place of the thirty-seven finishers in 14:51. Overall we haven’t finished a complete team in any of the five events and our fourteenth place overall reflects this. Under-17 Men Henry Cochrane finished seventh (18:44) of a field of just fifteen finishers at Blaise Castle in an age group where all of the clubs in the league seem to struggle to find runners. Bristol & West don’t currently appear on the team results at all but should do – even if it’s only to score Henry’s 18 points from Blaise Castle! Under-17 Ladies No club under-17 ladies ran at Blaise Castle so I am not sure how we scored 10 team points. Under-20 Men and Under-20 Women There were no runners in either race from the club at Blaise Castle and Miranda Sadler finished fourth overall in the league on the basis of her two early season runs over in Wales. Senior results The senior results have already been well-publicised on the club web-site – my only comment is let’s have more of the same in the 2014/2015 winter and let’s make it a double/double and a senior ladies hat-trick of wins. j.mp/1irM5KR
