H&B RFC U14 V Lewes (13/10/13) The weather looked imposing, and so did some of the forwards from Lewes as H&B kicked off the last of three very tough friendly fixtures at the beginning of this season. Once again, H&B couldnt muster a full team; Tom Hirst pulling up injured in the warm-up. So, with a re-shuffled line-up (including first starts for Nick Thornton at Wing and Hughie Paterson at Scrum-half), H&B needed to work hard in order to restrict the greater firepower of the Lewes forwards. From the recovery at the kick-off, centre Tony Leer ripped the ball and tore through the Lewes mid-line; sprinting away to score after only 30 seconds. A simple conversion gave H&B an unlikely early lead. H&B did well to wear down the Lewes attacks in the early part of the first half; solid tackling from (Second-row) Ben Green and (Centre) Jackyl Mallari ensuring that we had some structure in the midfield. Lewes used space well and managed to off-load the ball to the wings. Exposing some sleepy defence, H&B were 30 - 7 down at half time. H&B responded well in the second half, but despite some clever try-line defence from (Fly-half) Max Holmes, the home team were unable to contain the dangerous Lewes flanker from bagging his third of the game. Proving that H&B were not finished, there were some surging runs from (Hooker) Lee Hopkins, (Flanker) Lockie Macdonald and (wing) Louis Smithers. However, it was from a break in the centre by Tony Leer which provided the home sides second try. Leer converted his own try from a wide angle. A big improvement from many of the players, despite the eventual 14 - 44 loss. With H&B missing at least four key players, this match proved two things: When H&B tackle properly in defence and pass the ball in attack, they can play exciting and winning rugby. Also, when (when) H&B muster a full squad, they will be a dangerous rugby outfit. Man of the match goes to Tony Leer for his intelligent play in midfield, and his full-scoring effort. Team was: 1. Chandler Buckingham 2. Lee Hopkins 3. Henry Lusted 4. Ben Green (C) 5. David Villareal 6. Tommy Russell 7. Lockie Macdonald 8. [no player] 9. Hughie Paterson 10. Max Holmes 11. Louis Smithers 12. Jackyl Mallari 13. Tony Leer 14. Nick Thornton 15. Ollie Francis.. ......so proud ov him love him so much!, tones number 13
