HADLEYVILLE ON MY MIND: 37. REVIEWING Something people were saying online this morning reminded me of back when my daddy and his brothers used to get together and talk about the good ol days. Those were the good ol days for me, too, I guess. This past November, I vowed not to leave my house for anyone elses Thanksgiving dinner, but my daddys wife, Frankie, begged so much and swore Mr. Bass would be distraught if we didnt show up, so I broke down and went. Mind you, I had my doubts about that distraught bit, but I decided to cut Frankie a little slack. Turned out it wasnt a completely good idea. I dont know what Frankie had in mind, but that stuff she had the cook lay out for us wasnt in any way what we normally consider Thanksgiving fare. Frankie is going through a religious phase, so she insisted on having a blessing, so that occupied Mr. Bass for a bit. However, when he finally took a good look at the table and took in what she was giving us, it rocked him pretty good. His jaw dropped, and he just sat there that way for a beat or two or three. Frankie was watching him kind of nervously, all the while talking kind of fast and offering him stuff to sample. Then, all of a sudden, he reared up out of his chair and roared No! And stalked out of the room. We had the meal without him, and I found him later on over at my house, sitting in the kitchen, chewing on a turkey leg, and talking to my housekeeper, Miss Mavis. I guess people need to be careful how they try to run in nouvelle cuisine on us simple folk at our tribal rites times. Id have thought Frankie knew better than that. Well, she was pregnant again, so maybe that partly accounts for it. I hope she learned a lesson from the experience. I’ll sure think twice before I show up over there for Thanksgiving again!
