HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY MRS. ANNIE LOUTHER! THREE CHEERS!!! Mrs. Annie Louther was born on Sept. 17, 1914! She CELEBRATED 100 years on this earth on Wednesday, Sept 17, 2014. Tonight, Sept 20, her friends and family celebrated officially at a special dinner. Sunday at 11:00am, Dixwell United Congregational Church officially celebrated the completion of her 100th year. Her only surviving child and her grand- and great-grandchildren were in attendance. Rev. Streets preached a rousing sermon, and we were feted with songs, cakes and wonderful food. Her daughter-in-law, Laura Hall, came up from South Carolina for the celebration. Thom Lovia Brown put together a wonderful birthday Card Tribute. There were congratulatory messages from President Obama, Rosa DeLauro, and other dignitaries. Mayor Harp delivered her message in person. Mrs. Louther is mentally sharp, is in good health and has a delightful sense of humor. One of her main regrets is that she has buried three of her four children. On July 29, 2014, she sat and held the hand of her eldest child, Willie, as he passed from this world. Imagine the strength and fortitude that took! today her youngest son said his mother was the CEO of the family and she held them accountable as she guided them with love, affection and discipline. Annie Louther and Aldena Bright were the first two African American women to integrate the lunch counters at Kresge in 1941-43. She was asked by the manager if she wanted to manage the Hot Dogs and Hamburgers. She hired Aldena to help her because Aldena always took pride in how she presented herself. Mrs. Louther says it is always important that black people take pride in themselves. At 100 Mrs. Louther still takes great pride in how she presents herself. She buys only the best that she can afford and always looks splendid. OneWorlds Civic Engagement Program will publish an interview with Mrs. Louther and other seniors as a part of our Living History Thanksgiving Special. Many more years of joyous, healthy living Ms. Annie! https://youtube/user/oneworldpi/videos
