HAPPY 50TH TO BUBKA, by Alfons Juck, EME News KYIV (UKR): The best pole vaulter ever Sergey Bubka celebrated on Wednesday with his family the 50th birthday in private environment. The current IOC Executive Committee Member, IAAF Vice-President and President of Ukrainian NOC said on his website: „It is a special day for me today. Good time to say ‚thanks‘ to my mother, my family and friends for supporting me all these years. I wouldn‘t be where I‘m now without you. I really enjoy my age. I’m having great time being able to use my knowledge and experience for the sake of sport, for changing our world for better.“ Bubka achieved 35 World records what is best ever ahead of Yelena Isinbayeva 28, Haile Gebrselassie 27, Paavo Nurmi 22 and Ron Clarke 18 (L´Équipe). He was included into the IAAF Hall of Fame in 2012, being also designated UNESCO Champion For Sport in 2003 and honored as the best pole vaulter of the last half century by Track and Field News. In his native Ukraine Bubka has become the first athlete to be honoured with the highest state award - „Hero of Ukraine“. In his career he achieved 47 jumps at 6 meters or more in 45 competitions.
