HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO A NATION!!! From the indigenous Arrawaks and Carib Indians, to Columbus and the European invaders; from French, to British, to French and finally British rule alas; from crown colony, to federation, statehood, independence; from Elections to Revolutions, invasion and back to Elections, Grenada has etched her political name with the nonfading ink in golden pagesof global history . From sugarcane and indigo to nutmeg banana and cocoa; to fishing and a thriving tourist industry, we glean off her fertile soil and mined the sparkling sea. From the shores of Grand Anse, up the Grand Etang hills, across the Belvedere highlands, Kublal mountain and Mt St Catherines peak, down the gentle slopes, to the rolling plains of the eastern shores; from sand to glittering white sands, is nestled between, our spicy land. From tribal chiefs, vicroies, governors, chief of state, premiere, pime minister and military junte; from slavery to freedom and Columbus to Keith Mitchell, she has withstood it all. From Jannets fading winds to Ivans cosmic swirl, tailgated by Emilys, staggering blows, she weathered the storm and survived its woes. So, for five hundred and sixteen years to date , from 1498, this little island sublime, has indeed stood the rugged test of time. She has seen sunny days that has marked unique ways. Home to the father of the Federation, home of the Winward Island Broadcasting Servics (WIBS), First woman Governor, Carifta Xpo 69; 1st in the English speaking Caribbean to have staged a peoples revolution, 1st among her island peers to seize, in full attention, both of east and west. From Moscow city to Washington DC, men with superior power in their hand, feverishly seek to strategize a plan. And of course, Grenada can now be called the home of the quick and the Olympian brave, kirani James. Today is cause for jubilation. So from Grand Bacolett to Petite Suicke, Pumrose to Palmiste, Borrizgard to Conord, Mirabeau to Hillsborough, Hope City to Mt Hope, victoria to Queens park, Brookline to Florida and Pearls to Point Saline, lets hail Grenada and pledge ourselves to her. Within or outside we can with one heart and one spirit say that this land is our land, the land if our fathers and some of our many children.
