HAPPY FIFTH ANNIVERSARY, PROGRESSIVE! Dear Friends: This Sunday at 12 pm, 5631 Wells Avenue in St. Louis, Progressive African Methodist Episcopal Zion celebrates its 5th year as a congregation in the AME Zion denomination. Throughout today and tomorrow, we will be posting excerpts from Rev. McKoys sermons and our church radio broadcast, which can be heard online Saturdays at 2:30 pm, on KXEN radio, 1010 am. We have strived since 2009 to stay true to our roots as the Freedom Church, a designation applied at the time of our inception in 1821 in New York City. Harriett Tubman, Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass became members, Our first ordained Bishop was James Varick, whose leadership reflected the same intense commitment to the abolition of slavery as its well known early members. The African Methodist Episcopal Zion church can be traced back to the John Street Methodist Church of New York City, which Varick had joined shortly after its formation in 1766. Following acts of overt discrimination (such as black parishioners being forced to leave worship), many black Christians left to form their own churches Varick was a member of the group of Blacks who petitioned the state constitutional convention for the right to vote. He supported the establishment of Freedoms Journal, the first American black newspaper, in 1827. On July 4, 1827, the thanksgiving service for the final abolition of slavery in New York was held in Zion church. At present, AME Zion leadership, representing, 1.4 million persons, honor our church’s tradition of upholding human rights and equal rights under the law for African Americans in the United States. Our pastor continues working nonstop with youth and community organizers in Ferguson, and our church hosted a rally for youth leaders shortly after the murder of Michael Brown. AME Zion works to do Gods will, and thereby bring His kingdom to earth via outreach to missions in North and South America, as well as to Africa, and the Caribbean, specifically, in Nigeria, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Angola, Côte dIvoire, Ghana, England, India, Jamaica, St. Croix-Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago. In May 2012, The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church entered into full communion with the United Methodist Church, African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Union Methodist Protestant Church, Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and Union American Methodist Episcopal Church.
