HAPPY REFORMATION DAY!!!! Of course today our spotlight turns toward the German monk with fist full of nails and a whole lotta theses (95 to be exact ;) ). On this day in 1517, Dr. Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the All Saints Church door in Wittenberg, Germany which is recognized as the official impetus of the Protestant Reformation. Brought up on charges of heresy for his teaching of salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone and the doctrine of Sola scriptura, the teaching that the bible is the sole infallible authority for the church, he was excommunicated and was to be killed. During his trial when commanded to recant his teachings, Dr. Luther is famously quoted as saying, Unless I am convicted of error by the testimony of Scripture or (since I put no trust in the unsupported authority of Pope or councils, since it is plain that they have often erred and often contradicted themselves), by manifest reasoning, I stand convicted by the Scriptures to which I have appealed, and my conscience is taken captive by Gods word, I cannot and will not recant anything, for to act against our conscience is neither safe for us, nor open to us. On this I take my stand. I can do no other. God help me. He would have been imprisoned and killed, but he was captured by the ruler of his German province (Prince Frederick III) and whisked away to safety where Luther translated the Bible into German. There are multiple movies that have been made about Luthers life, (I think Ive seen them all :D ). Here is one of my favorites...Enjoy! youtu.be/WiExMMKvyIs?list=PLcl58FGHyDGlyN7Su-s6hQcfzAovSCcAn
