HAS THE STONE THE BUILDER REFUSED BECOME THE HEAD CORNER STONE? I listened to the address of Lady Janice Compton at the ceremony to unveil the statue of her late husband and it confirmed what I had always thought that her late husband was the most hated and villified politician in Saint Lucia. Looking back, I must confess that my feelings and reaction towards him in particular and his party in general were influenced by the tactics of demonization by the then protagonitst of the SLP, George Odlum and Peter Josie on my impressionable mind. I am sure many of my generation will attest to that as well. He was a very strong, courageous, determined, and fearless leader whose actions sometimes bordered on the dictatorial. However, on one can deny that he had a vision for Saint Lucia and that was to make us the Singapore of the West however fraught that vision was. At least he had a vision. The results of that unfulliflled vision are there for all of us to enjoy and build upon. It has often amazed me how hipocracy and politics are conjoined twins but that is the nature of things. Today we are witnessing a magnanimity of the same SLP who demonized him to the extent of a canonization. Except for the reticence when the issue of the honorific of Father of the Nation is broached. He and his family has been fully embraced by the SLP and his lagacy has been recognized much to the chagrin of some in the UWP. Aint that a biach?? I would like to think that we are witnessing a shift in our politics towards the less contumacious type. If this is a harbinger of things to come, I am therefore cautiously optimistic for the future of the nation. The congregation takes its cue from the pastor and so we would like to see a more conciliatory tone from the chief acolytes of the SLP and the UWP as I am of the firm belief that getting our politics right is a prerequisite for getting our economy and our society on the right path.
